“Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.”
(Isaiah 40:11)
When I looked up the readings for today, I started feeling quite emotional. Firstly, the Good Shepherd has been a beloved image of Christ for me and is always an invitation for me to rest.
Secondly, the weekend after Thanksgiving I attended a retreat. This retreat was more difficult than usual for me to feel prepared for as I struggled to put my own hopes, expectations, and desires out of my head so that I could just enter in. I began the retreat by surrendering all of those to the Lord, and He moved in incredible ways that weekend.
I have never felt more peace and the Lord continuously spoke loud and clear to my heart. As I look at today’s first reading, I’m reminded of this retreat and truths that speak to all of us:
The Lord cares for us and ensures we are provided for.
He gathers us in His arms like a shepherd gathers sheep or a parent gathers their children.
He holds us close to His chest so that we are comforted and protected.
He leads us with care.
Tradition holds that when a shepherd would carry a lamb that is weak, rejected, or injured, he would hold it close to his chest so that the lamb could hear his heartbeat and be kept warm. His heartbeat is not only calming for the lamb but builds trust between them.
Whether times are good or difficult, we are held close by our Lord and are offered the opportunity to rest and deepen our trust. He gives the peace we seek.
How can you rest in the comfort, protection, love, and care of the Lord today?
Lord, you are always present and holding me close. Please help me to remember this when times are difficult and to rest in you at all times. Amen.
