"When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to say to those invited, ‘Come, everything is now ready.’ But one by one, they all began to excuse themselves."
(Luke 14:17-18)
At a very young age, we learn that we can make excuses for things we did or didn’t do to justify our actions. “I didn’t do my chores because I had….”, or, “I didn’t do my homework because….” As we get older, the excuses become more elaborate. “I didn’t get the report done because….”, or “I cannot come to the wedding because….”
Sometimes we make excuses because we did not want to participate or thought it might be a waste of valuable time. “I missed Mass this weekend because my kids had travel ball or dance recital.” “I didn’t help the person on the street because they’ll just waste my generosity.” “I didn’t go to confession because my sins are too great and too many, and it won’t matter anyway.”
We have been invited to the eternal banquet. Yet the invitation still stands while we walk this planet. Jesus wants you to come back. I have used every one of these excuses at one time or another. Don’t make excuses for not going to church or building a relationship with the Father. Come home today before the invitation expires and you’re too late!
What are my priorities in life? Do I worship God or worldly pursuits?
Lord, give me the courage to be an example to others to faithfully worship you and serve those most in need. Amen.
