St. Maria Goretti
We are a joyful community of disciples
the Good News and
all people to
the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.
From death, life!
“Amen, amen I say to you. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies it produces much fruit.”
- John 12:24
Today’s Memorial commemorates the life and martyrdom of twelve year old St. Maria Goretti.
Though of a young age, Maria’s life provides many lessons. Uncompromising love of the Lord, even when faced with mortal danger, and forgiveness of those who hurt us are just two of the virtues we can learn from her during her brief life.
There are other lessons to be learned. After serving 27 years of his sentence for murder, Alessandro Serenellis returned from prison repentant, and begging forgiveness from Maria’s mother, which he received. He later entered a monastery and served as a lay brother until his death in 1970.
Hopefully, not many of us are faced with life-or-death decisions, but all of us encounter temptations that challenge us. Virtue grows with daily exercise, and we dare not wait for those “big” moments that will test our resolve. The old adage, “Practice makes perfect” applies in our spiritual life, too.
Do I even see the temptations that surround me? How do I handle them?
Good and gracious God, there are so many opportunities for me to choose You. Help me to stay aware of the ways You are present to me each day, all day. Help me to choose You, and thus be that grain of wheat that produces fruit in abundance.
